A LETTER TO THE TEA PARTY / FROM A ROMNEY SUPPORTER

By Evelio Perez
To Tea Party America, I need to get something off my chest so let me start by saying that I am a Mitt Romney supporter and a former proud member of the Tea Party. I am also a strong social, fiscal and foreign policy conservative and am not wishy-washy on any of these core principles. I believe in a strong America with sovereign borders and the rule of law. I believe in the sanctity of marriage, and I believe in protecting innocent unborn life.

But why are we even talking about a Tea Party?  What happened that we even needed to rebel against our own government?

We were BAMBOOZLED that's why!  After a collapse of the banking system and a disastrous recession for many, the Democrats were swept into power, the were led by a charismatic and inexperienced Community Organizer named Barack Hussein Obama, whose call for hope and change connected with the majority of the American people giving him a chance to really do something great and historic for this country.

But this adoration for President Obama did not last long as he and the Democratic controlled House and Senate started their Socialist experiment on an unsuspecting American people who simply wanted things to get better. President Obama and the Democrats went on a spending spree like no other in the history of this country, starting with a budget busting and unwanted Obama Health Care mandate to the almost 800 billion stimulus package that did not work. He and the Democrats continued the insult by giving billions of dollars in loans to crony green companies while raising the national debt to critical status, forcing a downgrade of our Triple A Bond ratings while getting us closer to a bankrupted economy.

President Barack Obama
People all around America were losing their jobs, inflation was starting to hit the grocery shelves, their bank accounts cleaned out and many were losing their homes, all this while their President, ignorant of their plight kept on spending. While the country was burning President Obama was often found on the golf course and many times he would take his family around the world on lavish family vacations costing millions to the already suffering national debt. We were being abused and ignored!

Rick Santelli
Then one obscure morning in one of his scheduled spots, CNBC analyst Rick Santelli goes hog wild with an on-air attack against President Obama's government bailouts of banks, car companies and in trouble debt mortgage holders using taxpayer money, during his rant Santelli called for a modern-day Boston Tea Party, this not only got a unanimous applause from the trading floor, but gave the name and the mythical birth of the modern day Tea Party.

The thought of a Tea Party was growing and coming to fruition, it was going to represent a huge block of dissatisfied and very angry Americans who felt that they were being used and ignored.
We had folks from all walks of life, we had Democrats, Republicans, Moderates, Conservatives and people from all ages, races and religions, we finally have had enough and were ready to fight to get our country back.
The true beauty of this great idea was that it had no leaders, it was a true grassroots movement of desperate people calling for true representation in our government.

Something happened on the way to saving this country, some self-proclaimed leaders of the Tea Party have decided to purify the movement and start defining their own ideals of their perfect America.
The Tea Party movement as good as it was going, was slowly starting to be taken over by the new holier than thou pretenders.

One of these groups, Freedom Works decided that first victim of their cleansing would be the "Mormon" Mitt Romney, his religion was just so un-Christian and evil that he just didn't belong, so they promoted anti-Romney rallies, branded him a Liberal and a flip-flopper with the ultimate goal to destroy the good name of this good and decent man.
In their infinite wisdom to define their vision for their new Tea Party, they not only made the Republican front-runner Mitt Romney Persona Non-Grata but managed to alienate, ostracize and insult almost half of the original and authentic Tea Partiers and Romney supporters, they have literally told all of us to go take a hike.

But for Pete's sakes, why aren't we going after the people that are hell-bent on destroying our way of life, are they not our real enemy?
Why are some of you trying to destroy The Tea Party movement that we all believed in?

Some self-described leaders of The Tea Party Organizations like Freedom Works, Red State,  Free Republic, along with leading conservative talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Mark Levin have begun defining to their millions of listeners who should belong to this very elite group. One of these groups ( Red State ) has gone as far as to ban Mitt Romney supporters from giving their opinion on their web page!

So let me get this straight, according to these people,  Mitt Romney is a Flip-Flopper and a Liberal...... OK, then let's see who the leaders of the New Tea Party are promoting to be their CONSERVATIVE champion for the Presidency of The United States.

1) Herman Cain, an accused sexual harasser of women with absolutely no clue on foreign affairs who endorsed Mitt Romney in 2007........Really?

2) Rick Perry, former Democrat who helped run Al Gore's Texas Gore for President campaign and the darling of the anti-illegal immigration crowd. who defended and still defends college tuition for illegals,  Perry also tried to force vaccine inoculations on 12-year-old girls

3) Newt Gingrich and Nancy Pelosi partner in the Global Warming scam, supported Obama Care and a  Health Care mandate since 2005.
He is the only Speaker of the House to have been disciplined for ethics violations.
Gingrich began an affair with House of Representatives staffer while he was married to wife number two.  ............... Really?

Ron Paul, Isolationist
4) Ron Paul, a 9/11 truther, and foreign affairs isolationist, anti- Semite, who would allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons.......... Really?

5) John Huntsman, was President Obama's Chinese ambassador, and was for a universal health care mandate before he was against it...... .... ( never mind )

6) Rick Santorum, who voted for the bridge to nowhere and endorsed Mitt Romney for President back in 2007......... Really?

7) Michelle Bachmann was a conservative darling before she talked her way out of  front-runner  status........Really

Bachmann hiding at null rally
8) Tim Pawlenty, a strong fiscal and social conservative, once considered a strong front-runner,  now not only endorses Romney but is co-chairman of the Romney campaign........Really

9) Chris Christie, The Tea Party faithful were begging and screaming for the Governor to get in the race, but he decided against it and enthusiastically endorsed Mitt Romney..........Yes really!

So let's sum it all up, the new Tea Party would rather back an inexperienced accused sexual harasser, a womanizer, an isolationist and an anti-Semite, a former Al Gore Democrat, a global warming and an Obama Care advocate, all who have proven to be major flip-floppers throughout their political careers, over a true conservative Mormon of whom CNN"s Pierce Morgan called the cleanest politician in America?  Really?

I have been stunned and bewildered by the drastic actions of this once proud organization on one of its own, their backstabbing attacks on our preferred candidate has hit us hard, hit us fast and hit us under the belt........... bottom line, none of us deserved this.

As I write this I feel ashamed and betrayed and have come to the realization that the Tea Party no longer speaks for me. Some of you have become a scourge and an embarrassment to true conservatives who still believe in good moral and ethical values.
Instead of gaining status and respect with conservatives, you are losing the battle for the minds of the average American who can see bigotry when it's right in front of them.

This was never about what a few of you wanted, it was about what we all wanted and somewhere down that path, some of you lost your way.

So it's your party and you don't want us to come?  O.K. we won't,  but just don't expect us to come back when you need us........... Romney / 2012

This is terrific! If I weren't so lazy and inarticulate, I would have written the samething. I agree with all your points, I'm just a dumb blonde girl and to me it comes down to the ridiculas media talking point "they're just not in love with Romney" I say fake it! I do it all the time, please, grow up, don't let teaparty power go to your heads, just remember, what do big piggies get? slaughtered. you're not marrying him (still ok by me)and you're not adopting him. O K, we all on board now? I'll just about do anything to get Obama out, hey, you know what? I think I'm in love! or am I faking, you'll never know!

Nailed it. As a once proud supporter of the original tea party movement and its ideals I have already voiced my concerns when and where I could about the hijacking of this grassroots movement and have ceased any support, financial or otherwise of such organizations as Freedomwatch and Redstate. Although I would like to still consider myself a tea party supporter, these hijacking organizations do not speak for me nor the great majority of my friends and acquaintances who once considered ourselves tea party members. Romney is perhaps our last best hope for restoring our economy and the greatness of this nation.

While I can poke holes in your argument for some of the listed candidates, I can also pile on the reasons why they should not be picked:

1. Herman Cain:
It's not looking good for him on the morality side of things. But even if he is innocent of the charges, he has handled the charges so badly, he gave the story legs. His answer to all situations is 999. But this hurts the poor, so it is 909. But it still hurts the middle class. The TEA Party darling will actually raise taxes on the middle class. Foreign policy stance? 999. I could go on.

2. Rick Perry:
Eh? So what that he was a former Democrat who ran Al Gore's campaign. Let's look at what he's done since then. See how conservative his record... has ... been? Oh, wait. It's not at all conservative. He's got crony capitalism. He's got forced (mandated) inoculations using a drug that could be deadly. The mandate assumes 13 year old girls are sexually promiscuous. He attempted to use Eminent Domain to acquire farmland. He is living in a mansion off the tax payer dime while his own house has been in a 3 year "remodeling". I could go on (lest we forget his atrocious debating skills).

3. Newt Gingrich: You nailed him.

4. Ron Paul:
He has some really good ideas that TEA Partiers may be able to get behind. He has some REALLY BAD ideas that would destroy this country in the short term and in the long term. This isn't the 1920's anymore.

5. John Hunstman:
The only candidate to be fully supported by the Left wing (MSM) media. It is so bad, that for the debates, they had to twist and turn the rules to allow Huntsman, but disallow another candidate. He has never polled above 5% and he has polled at 0%. The people can see him for what he is, an attempt to get the Mormons to vote for another candidate. Perhaps I am giving the Left too much credit. Perhaps Huntsman is just in this because he is jealous of Mitt Romney for stealing his thunder at the SLC Olympics, where Mitt Romney orchestrated another of his famous turn arounds.

6. Rick Santorum:
The only guy who might actually have a chance, if he had any ideas. He has no organization like Romney, he has no plans like Romney, his record is good, but isn't quite what we need for the country at this point.

7. Michelle Bachmann:
Also a good choice, if she had actually served for more than a couple of years. We already know what inexperience gives us in the White House.

8. There is no 8.

9. Tim Pawlenty: Converted to Mitt Romney's team

10. Chris Christie: The new Flavor of the Month... until he become the new RINO of the month (/me rolls eyes)

Excellent and well written article.

#8 must've been Michigan's McCotter, excellent on many issues but iffy on one or two, who entered a bit late, didn't generate enough attention, and then also resigned to endorse Romney.

Yes, very well written.

To Machtyn, while I don't believe that Huntsman is a serious contender for this race, I don't agree with your reasoning. One thing I would like to point out is that when he was Governor of Utah, the state had a balanced budget and is fiscally sound. He may have some lessons we could use.

Outstanding!! I didn't leave the tea party, they left me! I still call myself a tea party-er, but it now requires an explanation. I don't donate to or belong to any TP organization. Maybe some day, we can separate those who were simply looking for less spending and government, from the right wingers who to a large extent, have hijacked the TP. But they are finding out the hard way that being President requires more than having a copy of the Constitution, from The Heritage Foundation, in your pocket.

Wow.. wow.. wow. I want to really thank you for this outstanding letter. I wish every Tea Party member would just have the courage to read it. They don't have to respond. Just read it.
I say this because this author sounds--and writes--very similarly to myself. In fact, I created a Facebook page called 'Conservatives Against the Self-Sabotage of Rush Limbaugh and the Tea Party.' I invite all "thinking conservatives," and those who love their country for all the right reasons to join. Please read the 'Description' under the 'Info' section to familiarize yourself with the purpose of the page itself. Here is the link...

Well said and I agree.I really believe Romney will be a great president.

I am an original Tea Partier - a Ron Paul supporter since the 2008 campaign. You and I agree on all but two things:

Number 1 - I think Mitt Romney is a political opportunist that will say anything to get elected, but is still a big government globalist that will not try to appreciably shrink the size of the federal government and doesn't really even understand the underlying causes (the main one being a currency that is fast becoming worthless due to the collusion of the government and the federal reserve) of our current economic mess in this country. If Mitt Romney gets elected, it will be as if George Bush got back in the white house. Further, Romney only cares about political expediency, he cares not for the constitution. I know a lot of people have come to the opinion that the constitution doesn't matter anymore, but I am not one of them.

Number 2 - Ron Paul is not an anti-Semite, a racist, or offering to give Iran a nuclear weapon. I read the links you provided as your proof - but they were only opinion pieces that did not have ANY proof to back up your claims. I won't even bother to answer your first two points, because they are just too far out there to give any credence to. But, I have heard a lot of people repeat what you said about Iran, so I'll touch briefly on that. Ron Paul has NEVER said he would like for Iran to get a nuclear weapon. He has said that it's not really our business what Iran does. He has said that Iran's neighbors who are threatened (Israel) are perfectly capable of handling the problem without our meddling. He also said on Saturday's debate that if Iran ever does become an imminent threat, and we as a country decide that war is in order, that we should do it constitutionally - that is, declare war - and then go kick there ass, and then come home. These decades long occupations of foreign countries are bleeding us dry financially, as well as literally.

Anyways, I just thought I would offer my two cents.

PS: If Romney gets the nomination, I know many millions of Paul supporters would never vote for Romney. So good luck to getting your guy into office without us. :-)

Tea Partier--I can't believe you compared Romney to Bush. I think Romney has a greater knowledge of the workings of the money side of government than Bush and I think he will be more likely to actually do what he says he will do. Just look at anything he has said in the past that he will do, and observe that he has done it.

I, too, looked at all three links about Ron Paul and while the first two were in fact just other people's opinions, the last was in his own words and I must confess, his views scare me.

Lastly, if Romney is the nominee, do you really think people will choose to allow Obama back in office just because Romney isn't Paul? Don't you think Romney at the very least will do better than Obama has done?

Anonymous said...

Right on!!! I couldn't say it better myself. I too, was a tea partier and received all sort of materials from the so called tea party leader. Now I just throw them away. Romney is the man who can save us from ruin. I am so frustrated by a bunch of media including Larry Kudlow,Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, etc. for attacking Romney and praising other candidates who are clueless and carry a bunch of baggage. I don't care Romney is being considered as conservative or not(that just a label that some people give to create a stereotype). The main concern is his vision and his ability to lead the country. I am convinced that he has both and even more important he loves this country.
Thanks for writing this letter.

I am sadly disappointed that Rush and "Fair and Balanced" pander to the larger market of Evangelicals and Tea Party. It's just a market strategy.

Free Republic founder Jim Robinson has a message for supporters of Mitt Romney: go away.

In an email to POLITICO this afternoon, Robinson admitted that the site routinely blocks Romney supporters from posting -- and offered no apologies for the practice:
